Jim Goudie, AF3Z was first licensed in 1967 as WN3INP and then WA3INP. Due to significant mic fright, he made one AM qso after getting his General class license and then retreated to the world of CW. After high school he went to Philco Technical Institute in Philadelphia for two years for electronics. And then on to Millersville State College (now university) as a Physics major for teaching in high school. The sciences were what Jim liked best in school. Toward the end of college he switched directions and followed up college with 3 years at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., and became a United Methodist pastor.
During those years after high school, Jim became inactive on the radio and let his license expire (not recommended). Once out of school and serving his first churches, a hand-me-down CB radio reignited his interest. Thanks to his electronics education and some additional studying, he was able to come away from the FCC office in Philadelphia with his Extra Class ticket in 1979. Since that time Jim has kept up his love of CW as well as becoming very comfortable with the microphone, especially on 2m FM. Since being retired in 2016, ham radio activity has really increased, especially on 146.985, the W3GMS repeater and with the Straight Key Century Club (SKCC).
